“Overall great experience. My internship at Sargent introduced me to manufacturing engineering and helped me think more critically about how to design things to be made easily and at low cost without sacrificing function (one of the most important skills of a mechanical engineer) My favorite thing was learning about machining processes from the techs I worked with. It complimented my existing engineering knowledge with valuable things only learned after years of experience. I worked to eliminate a bottleneck in the testing of hydraulic submarine valves. My project was designing and building a new test table that standardized parts and reduced setup and teardown time.”

“My internship at Sargent was amazing. Everyone had an open door policy and was always willing to answer questions or help with problems. I was challenged during my internship and I was able to learn so many new skills. I gained more technical knowledge and gained confidence in my abilities. With my project I was able to make a visual difference which was so rewarding. I really enjoyed my time at Sargent and I am so grateful for the experience” 

"Sargent’s summer internship program provided me with invaluable experience, both technical and non-technical. As a design and test engineering intern, I gained familiarity with design for manufacturing, 3D modeling and engineering drawing standards, and engineering test procedures. Being a tight-knit company working on exciting projects, I was given responsibility to work through challenging engineering problems - which is uncommon for an internship - but had constant access to support from very knowledgeable and helpful engineers to coach me through my projects. My experience at Sargent gave me a very strong base of engineering and professional skills that a college degree alone cannot provide."

"As a Design Engineering intern I had the opportunity to learn Creo Parametric (3D modeling software) and gained exposure to Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) which was not taught in school, but is an asset especially to a Mechanical/Manufacturing engineer. My day to day consisted of typical drawing changes, as one would inspect in design engineering. However, the highlight of my internship was designing my own bearing package, making drawings for all the components, signing the drawings and releasing them to our drawing database for production parts. I also helped the manufacturing team by designing and making drawings for tooling used to make bearings. This differed from previous internships I held because I was able to design parts and tooling at my computer, then walk out to the shop floor and watch my drawings become physical parts, which is one of the most rewarding things as an engineer!"

“I had a great experience with my internship with Sargent. My team members were very helpful when I had questions and easy to talk to. I enjoyed completing several small projects over the summer. I learned about various bearing designs and modeling them into Creo. It was interesting to learn how the manufacturing process works and implementing that into its design. Additionally, I enjoyed designing a lens guard for one of the instruments in the test lab. It was fun making a few iterations for the design and using the 3-D printer. I appreciated seeing the work I completed be useful in real-time.” 

"During the course of my internship, I dedicated myself to three major projects, each of which provided invaluable experiences and learning opportunities. I was tasked with finding a suitable replacement for the current Gerber cutter and updating the related work instructions (RWPs) as well as working on the Aon M2+ 3D Printer, where I became familiar with its utilization and created essential work instructions. The experience of printing calibration models and necessary components to enhance the production floor was both gratifying and enlightening. My favorite project involved researching higher-quality alternatives to RTV 630, commonly known as "Blue Rubber," and updating the existing RWPs. The insights gained during this time were invaluable, as I became well-versed in the intricacies of the manufacturing process and learned to devise and implement automation methods to boost productivity. As a result, I am now more confident in my abilities to contribute meaningfully to a team and witness the tangible benefits of my efforts in optimizing efficiency. I highly recommend the Sargent internship to prospective engineering students seeking to gain hands-on experience in a dynamic and supportive work environment. The wealth of knowledge and practical skills I acquired during my time here have left an indelible mark on my career journey.”
